Blog Challenge - HELP MR. O!!!

Hi guys, I need your help. 

As you can see, I have added a picture to the header.  Two problems:

1. I don't want the picture to be so high, but I want it to stretch across the whole page.  This is a technical issue.  It has to do with HTML code.  I was on the trail last night, but ran out of gas. 
2. I want to know what picture should be our header?  I only want serious suggestions, please.  Remember, it is a school blog and it has to do with the daily happenings of Room 107.

Some ideas that I had were:

• A winding road (sort of a metaphor of how we never no where life is taking us)
• A beautiful prairie sky (with the idea that "the sky's the limit")
• Olympic rings (good for now, but I'd like to have something stay there)

Some of the other teachers that I have checked out, use an open window (the blog is always open) or a picture of their school for a picture on the header blog.

What do you guys and girls think?

Surface Area Challenge

Today in class we re-introduced the concept of Surface Area.

Your challenge is to find a image or photo, either on the internet, or from a picture you have taken (remember - no faces allowed!) that shows:

a real life example of either a rectangular prism, a triangular prism, or a cylinder.

ONCE YOU DO:

1. upload that picture, along with a short caption explaining what the prism or cylinder is, to the blog

2. Make an appropriate title for the post

3. Label the post: SA Challenge, growing post

Changing of the blog

There are some changes to this blog to start off 2010.

First off:

- I added a link to the online textbook that we are using in Math class. This way students can use the blog to find out what homework they missed (and how to do it) and then click on that link if the homework involves work from the textbook. (The links section can be found in the column on the right side, near the bottom.)

- The blog has changed from a Math only blog to a blog that is extension of all of Mr. O's classes. Since there is more than Math going on in Room 107, there will be more than Math going on to the "new" blog. (As a sidenote, the web address will remain 107mathblog.blogspot.com.) To reflect this change, note the change of title at the top of the blog.

Recharging...back in the 2010!!

Hello everyone,

It has been a crazy last few weeks. We have had a lot going on, and a lot of computer problems at school as of late, so we have taken a brief hiatus from the blog.

Not to worry though. We will be up and running once again in the New Year with lots of great improvements...

- SmartBoard Lessons attached
- more scribes
- more videos
- possibly a Math chat room
- and much more.

What is a scribe post?

A scribe post is basically like you are teaching the class again, but this time in your words in a way that other people can understand it. You can also recap other important things that we talk about in class (like planning for our Halloween party on Friday) so that if someone was away in our class, they would know what they missed. Also don't forget that when you scribe, you get the power to choose the next scribe.

Today's goals:

• learn how to let others (ie. students) access and contribute to my blog
• explain to more students what this blog is all about
• continue to play and learn.

Alrighty then.

First post of my new blog.

Inspired by the BlogFather. I'm willing to give it a shot and join the modern world, at least to some degree (I am still holding out on the cellphone situation.)

The goal of this blog is to help my students best understand the Math that we are covering here at VJH in 2009-2010. Simply sitting around class listening to me (while occassionally entertaining) just is not going to cut it. Time to let the students become the teachers.

Each day, I am going to assign one student to take notes on the lesson(s) we covered that day in Math. That student should will best understand the lesson if they are able to put it into their own words. Once they have prepared notes for their day, the student will post their notes on this blog for the rest of the students to review.

Obviously, the student inputting the notes needs to know their stuff in order to teach that lesson to the rest of the class. Also, the rest of the students will benefit by being able to go and read the blog in the words of one of their fellow classmates - rather than the textbook which can be confusing at times.

Every day, we will choose a new student to be the "scribe" for the day. With 25 students in class, it will take 5 or 6 weeks before any student has to do the job for the second time.
